This experiment aims to investigate the effect of concentration of the salt (NaCl) on the on the early growth of snow pea seeds. 1). Background information
Seed germination starts withimbibitionin a series of orderly physiological and morphogenesis process. The germination of seeds need appropriate temperature, moisture, plenty of air. Imbibition is the first step forseed germination. There exists a large central vacuole in many mature plants cells, whose function is osmosis in the process of the growth. Seeds are immature plants cells without formation of vacuole. They depends on thehydrophilic colloid such as cellulose and pectic substances constitutingthe cell walls, protein which is the composition of protoplasm, and macromolecular compounds like starch whose function is storage so that it can achieve imbibition. These hydrophilic colloid substances can absorb a lot of water molecules on their surface, making the colloid volume expansion.
